Egypt’s Wooden Lock & Key
With all the turmoil going on in Egypt, I am reminded of several contributions to society that country brought the world including the first Lock & Key!
Around 4000 years ago the oldest know door lock was being used in Egypt. It consisted of a large wooden key about 1 cubit (an ancient unit of length, equal to the distance from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger), and wooden pin tumbler lock on the reverse side of the door. Most homes today still use locks with a similar basic pin tumbler design.
Does this mean the first locksmith was an Egyptian and the first service truck was a camel?
Have a great week!
